Through a variety of themes and a selection of spectacular silhouettes and accessories from high-end designers and fashion houses, the exhibition highlights the significance of Haute Couture for contemporary fashion. Completed with photography, film, art and music, Haute-à-Porter offers a unique insight into the fashion industry of the last 30 years. The exhibition was curated by Filep Motwary, known for his costume design, journalistic activities and photography.

The exhibition is ranked by French Vogue as one of the top three for 2016, internationally.

Thinking about Haute Couture, the first notions that come to mind are embellishment, artisanship, volume, extravagance, embroidery, showmanship, lace, tulle, featherwork, technique and flamboyance.

The essence of Haute Couture is that it is made to measure, as opposed to Pret-à -Porter, which is Ready-to-Wear or Confectionary Fashion.

The origin of Haute Couture go back to the second half of the 19th century and more specifically to the Paris based Fashion Designer Charles Frederick Worth who is credited with elevating fashion to an art form and the Fashion Designer to an Artist.

Over the past three decades, we have witnessed Pret-à-Porter gradually surpass its maiden purpose and head into unchartered waters with a different and much broader creative horizon.

More than 60 years have passed since the beginning of the immaculate era of Haute Couture dictated by Paris. In contemporary Haute Couture and Pret-à-Porter we witness beauty and creation without always being able to pin-point the origin and concept, the craftsmanship and shapes that lie behind them. Fashion today is a widespread phenomenon that has invaded our lives both consciously and subconsciously.

Does creativity really exist today’s Pret-à-Porter? Is it linked to it’s couture past? What other ways of designing fashions have been introduced? Is this the end of fashion? Is the reign of Haute Couture over? Based on what Pret-à-Porter designers offer, probably not. But it does lead to the important and topical question: How closely are Haute Couture and Pret-à-Porter affiliated?

Haute-à-Porter captures these questions in different ways through Pret-à-Porter and Haute Couture creations. The exhibition outlines the importance of both Pret-à-Porter and Haute Couture as specific fields in fashion and examines their codependency.

Alongside this, Haute-à-Porter offers insight into the creative process of contemporary fashion its sources of inspiration.
